M.U.G.E.N. (mugen)

for Batocera and Retrobat

M.U.G.E.N - a freeware program to create your own 2D games (brawlers), written in C. The game engine was released in 1999 by Elecbyte and was developed for the next four years. Since 2003 the company discontinued support for the engine, however Elecbyte returned to the engine development and released a new version in 2009. Updates released between 2004 and 2008 were unofficial versions of the original engine.

The word "mugen" probably comes from the Japanese language where it means dream, fantasy, or infinity. Officially Elecbyte claims to have forgotten what the acronym they chose for the name means, but the included documentation suggests that the engine was originally intended for use in shoot'em ups.

The engine is easily configurable. You can modify many elements of the game, including characters, arenas and the look of the engine itself. M.U.G.E.N community is centered around Internet themed forums, where users share the games they have created, as well as characters, which often represent characters from popular computer games.

The package includes:

85 games (~68 GB)
